Man, 30s, released without charge during investigation into murder of prisoner, 40s, in cell in Cloverhill Prison

A MAN, aged in his 30s, has been released without charge as part of a murder probe into the death of a prisoner in Cloverhill Prison.

Detectives continued quizzing the suspect last night, who was brought into garda custody from Cloverhill Prison on Saturday.

It comes after 43-year-old Martin Salinger was found dead in a cell after 5am that morning.

The suspect, Salinger and another inmate were housed in a two-man cell on the D1 protection landing.

Salinger was stabbed in the neck before the other prisoner was also injured in the attack.

Gardai have said a file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions and investigations are ongoing.

A spokesperson said: “Gardai at Ronanstown continue to investigate all the circumstances surrounding the death of a prisoner at Cloverhill Prison in Dublin on Saturday, 5th October 2024.

“The man (30s) arrested in relation to this investigation has been released without charge, from detention under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

“A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

“Investigations are ongoing.”

Salinger, from Ballyfermot in west Dublin, was known to gardai for involvement in serious crime.

He was awaiting trial after being stopped in a car with a kilo of cannabis and a handgun.

Gardai at Ronanstown are continuing to “investigate all the circumstances” surrounding the death of the prisoner.

On Saturday, a spokesperson said: “Shortly after 5:30 a.m., Gardaí and emergency services were alerted by prison authorities to an incident within the prison.

“A man in his 40s, who was injured during the incident, received treatment from emergency services but was pronounced deceased a short time later.”

The scene was preserved for a full forensic and technical examination.

The Coroner was notified and the services of the State Pathologist and Garda Technical Bureau were requested.

The spokesperson added: “A Garda Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation and a Family Liaison Officer (FLO) has been assigned to the family of the deceased.

“The investigation is ongoing and further updates will follow.”
