New details of the tragic shipwreck of the Bayesian yacht, which left seven fatalities and many unknowns

The tycoon’s vacation Mike Lynch aboard the impressive yacht Bayesian ended up becoming one of the great tragedies of the summer. He known as British Bill Gates He was with his family and friends celebrating that he had been acquitted after a long legal process when his boat sank while docked in the Italian waters of Porticello. This shipwreck with seven fatalities left a series of unknowns to which different experts have tried to answer in a documentary that sheds light on what happened both on August 19 and the following days.

One of the most repeated questions is: how could a sailboat measuring 50 meters in length, weighing 474 tons and with a 75-meter aluminum mast sink while docked? The first information suggested that a sea storm (similar to a tornado) destroyed it in a few seconds, but there was also a lot of speculation about a possible human error that would have caused water to enter. In The Sinking of a Superyachtthe documentary that ITV has done on the case, they raise a new possibility: that the shipwreck was caused by a downburst, a sudden and violent meteorological phenomenon that causes strong currents of up to 150 kilometers per hour.

Divers and rescuers participate in the aforementioned space and have explained why the rescue efforts lasted four days, the difficulties they faced and what they found when they submerged in the remains of the ship. “‘The victims were found on the lower level. We found the people in a room. Taking into account the time of the sinking, everyone was in their rooms sleeping,” they said. Having located everyone together in the same compartment, they have the theory that they joined together to try to escape.

The last fatality who was taken from the boat was Hannah Lynchwhich they had a hard time finding. “Because the girl was small, petite, her body was hidden behind mattresses, that’s why it took us longer to find her.” Furthermore, they say that it was very difficult emotionally because “recovering a child or a young person affects you more than it affects an adult,” he said. The daughter of the owner of the Bayesian was 18 years old and was excited about joining the University of Oxford in September to study English Literature.

The victims and the ongoing investigation process

They were in total seven people who lost their lives on the boat: its owner, Mike Lynch; his daughter, Hannah; attorney Chris Morvillo and his wife, jeweler Neda Morvillo; and executive Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, philanthropist Judy. While the six of them were trapped, the seventh victim, the chef they had on board, Recaldo Thomas, was found in the water. Among the 15 people who did manage to save were Lynch’s wife and a one-year-old girl named Sophia. The little girl was with her mother and they had time to go up on deck and take a lifeboat along with other companions to get to land. In addition to listening to the testimonies of the survivors in search of the key to knowing what really happened, the Sicilian prosecutor’s office is investigating the crew to see if the human side influenced the shipwreck.
