FOXBORO — Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo announced Friday morning that rookie offensive tackle Caedan Wallace will be placed on injured reserve.
Wallace injured his ankle in the Patriots’ 30-13 loss to the 49ers and didn’t return to the game.
Mayo said there’s a chance that Wallace, a 2024 third-round pick, could return this season. He started the Patriots’ Week 3 loss to the Jets at left tackle.
The Penn State product played right tackle in college, but the Patriots felt he could transition to left tackle in the NFL. He’s allowed one sack, one QB hit and one hurry in 70 offensive snaps and 31 pass-blocking opportunities this season. He’s also been used as a jumbo tight ending obvious running situations.
The Patriots started Chukwuma Okorafor at left tackle in Week 1, but he was benched after 12 snaps for Vederian Lowe. Okorafor left the team prior to Week 2, and Lowe started against the Seahawks. Lowe suffered an injury at the end of that game, and Wallace started Week 3. Demontrey Jacobs, who was claimed off waivers from the Broncos before Week 1, started Week 4 against the 49ers.
Wallace’s injury leaves the Patriots with Lowe, Jacobs and Mike Onwenu at tackle on the 53-man roster and Caleb Jones and Jalen McKenzie on the practice squad.
