Inhabitants of at least seven communities located andIn the northern area of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec they remain on alert due to a strong smell of hydrocarbonscausing fear and uncertainty by not knowing the origin, ask the authorities of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) to carry out an investigation to prevent any type of incident from happening, such as the one recorded in 2013, where unfortunately an ammonia leak caused the death of nine people.
Cliceria Vásquez Tolentino, 63, a resident of “Chivaniza,” explained to Milenio that it was in the late evening when they began to smell a strong smell, there she thought it was ammonia like what happened 11 years ago. “At night we were sitting there with my daughter and she told us, grandma we got a very strange smell, right she tells me, yes daughter I’m already feeling it too, that’s the ammonia I told her.”
In some communities the smell confused the population, while some claimed it was ammonia, others smelled a sulfur smell.
Aurelio Guzmán, former municipal agent of the “Chivaniza” community, confirmed to MILENIO the presence of that aroma, however so far no authority has been able to determine its origin. “If yesterday afternoon something stronger was felt, it was a smell like a kind of burning oil, if we are on alert due to the experience we had 11 years ago, the truth is it was very complicated, the truth is it is very important to be attentive.”
Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) has leaked information unofficially, indicating that pipeline personnel have carried out tours in the company of municipal agents of the communities where the presence of these odors has been reported, however they have not found any indication of a leak.
