He Judge Brian Cogan decided to once again postpone the sentence against the former Secretary of Public Security, Genaro García Lunafound guilty in early 2023 of crimes related to cocaine trafficking and lying to US authorities.
According to a minute from the federal court in Brooklyn, New York, it will be until 1October 6th at 3:30 in the afternoon when the sentence was handed down.
The US Prosecutor’s Office has requested that the life imprisonmentwhile the Mexican’s defense has requested that only 20 years behind bars.
García Luna was accused by various former drug traffickers of having received million-dollar bribes, first when he was in charge of the Criminal Investigation Agency and then in charge of the SSP, to allow organizations such as the Sinaloa Cartelthe Beltrán Leyva cartel and the Millennium Carteltrafficking cocaine to the United States.
What could be the sentence against García Luna?
On Thursday, September 19, the United States Attorney’s Office asked Judge Brian Cogan to impose a life prison sentence on the former Secretary of Public Safety, after he was found guilty in early January 2023 of conspiring to traffic cocaine to the country.
“Their crimes demand justice. For these reasons and for the reasons already explained, the government respectfully requests that the Court impose a sentence of life imprisonment,” reads the sentencing memorandum presented by the US Attorney’s Office, prior to the Mexican’s sentencing.
