Venezuelan actor Victor Oliveira knows that the search for diversity in projects and characters is essential for his development and professional stability. This has led him to explore roles that live in universes as different as his stories, but, although he has been fortunate to work on great projects – some in the fertile terrain of platforms, others in the woods of the theatre –, he also fights against feeling pigeonholed. Through his own creativity, he escapes the acting epidemic that subjects thousands of performers to the same characters over and over again.
“For me diversity is super important, “And I think that for every actor or actress who always wants to feel alive,” explained Victor Oliveira in an interview. “We have to fight against the fact that the industry wants to pigeonhole us, either because of our physical appearance or the type of character we play, but going from playing a Colombian drug dealer who lives in Miami in the 1970s and 1980s to playing a Nazi who lives in Berlin in 1930… That is the spectrum that one wants to play.”
Hotel Cocaine will arrive on Prime Video on September 25, A series that became a phenomenon in every territory it visited in the middle of this year and that now reaches Latin audiences through the platform. In this series – starring Danny Pino, Yul Vazquez, Laura Gordon, Michael Chiklis and Corina Bradley, among others – Víctor is part of this world of drug trafficking with a character that presented him with particular challenges and that enters into this archetypal parenthesis of a character he already knows.
“Maybe my box is with the nefarious characters, “In the antagonistic ones. In the characters that, generally, belong to the dark side of the force. The industry tends to play with what is known; if you have already played certain roles that are distinguished by some characteristic, you will most likely continue to be pigeonholed in that type of role. As well as being a disadvantage, it can also become an opportunity,” said the actor in an interview with MILENIO.
“This year has been a year of a lot of work and I am very grateful, “But it’s also been about writing my own projects and finding the character I’d like to see myself in. Whenever I talk to friends I say that I’d like to be the normal guy who’s just having a coffee, I don’t need to be another villain, I’d like to be a more normal character.”
In this search for his own artistic limits and desiresVíctor has been motivated to write his own shorts, to design his own path and find in it an unknown facet of his craft. That is why he considers that the platforms have been a fantastic area of opportunity for him and other colleagues and although he accepts that in recent years the job offer has changed a lot, he is sure that it is possible to turn each project, and each character, into an opportunity to advance and find new stimuli.
Hotel Cocaine, the phenomenon
Whether it’s because of its great cast, believable production or captivating story, the reality Hotel Cocaine has been a hit with the public in every territory. Prime Video is bringing back this series that follows the story of exiled CIA agent Roman Compte (Danny Pino) and shows us, through his eyes, the lavish and dangerous world of the Miami cocaine scene in the 1970s and 1980s.
“Through Hotel Cocaine we can perceive the world that was glamorous at the time. The world of drugs in Miami in the late 1970s and early 1980s, where corruption, lack of legality and institutions to combat crime were present (…) It is a story of drama, action and a lot of entertainment for everyone,” explained Victor Oliveira.
“In Australia we were number one on a streaming service called Stan Australia, The reception was wonderful and the same in the United States, if I’m not mistaken, the reception has been very positive and I think with good reason, because we have a cast and a crew that did a spectacular job. And finally, Latin Americans, the people of Spain and the people of Europe, are going to be able to see Hotel Cocaine.”
Victor believes that the project is based on the relationship that developed between the cast and production team: a work dynamic that, backed by top-level production values, managed to convey its story and win over its audience. Víctor invites the public not to miss any episode of this series and experience, with them, the false perfection of the criminal world of that time.
“This is the most I have ever been involved in, and I have been fortunate to be in several large projects, “both in Mexico and Europe. Hotel Cocaine is a very cool piece of entertainment and was put together by a truly Latin American team, and I’m not just referring to the actors and actresses,” he concluded.
