The governor of Chiapas, Rutilio Escandónreported this Tuesday, October 22, that there is already a detainee for the murder of the father Marcelo Pérez Pérez.
“My gratitude to the Justice Attorney authorities, who have informed me that the material author of Father Marcelo’s death has been arrested,” the president reported through his X account.
FGR, in charge of the investigation
This morning, President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that the investigation into the murder of Father Marcelo Pérez Pérez has already been attracted by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).
“I want to tell you that in the case of the death of the father (Marcelo Pérez Pérez) the investigation was already attracted by the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic,” he highlighted.
Who was Father Marcelo Pérez?
Marcelo Pérez was parish priest of the Guadalupe church in San Cristóbal de las Casas. His work as an activist began in 2014 when he made a pilgrimage that traveled through 12 municipalities until reaching the capital of Chiapas, in which he denounced the increase in drug sales and criminal groups.
Likewise, he is the founder of the “Movement in Defense of Life and Territory”, made up of Tseltal, Tsotsile and Ch’ole men and women from 13 municipalities in the highlands and jungle area in the state of Chiapas.
The priest, in his quest to promote the resolution of violent events, proposed creating an intermediation commission in 2021 in which the Diocese of San Cristóbal and state and federal authorities would participate.
After the events, he was transferred to his current church where he participated in a pacification mobilization in Chiapas, in which he assured that they would no longer endure the violent events.
