This morning a earthquake in Mexico City and in some areas surrounding the country’s capital; however, the seismic alert was not activated.
He National Seismological Service reported that one was registered at 10:26 a.m. in the country’s capital, magnitude 2.4located two kilometers west from the Benito Juárez mayor’s office.

Why did the seismic alert not sound?
Since it is a micro-earthquake, it is common for the seismic alert not to be activated. This is because there is no time to alert citizens about the proximity of an earthquake, since the epicenter is too close.
Meanwhile, the Mexican Seismic Alert System of the Center for Seismic Instrumentation and Registration has previously announced that, due to the fact that the energy radiated by this type of earthquake during the first few seconds is not sufficient to activate the alarms and emit an alert sound in the systems of Mexico City.

The seismic alert is a tool used in several states of the country, such as in Mexico City, where it is broadcast on more than 20 thousand loudspeakers installed on C5 poles in the capital when a large magnitude earthquake occurs or during drills.

Information from seismic sensors near the earthquake site enables the automatic issuance of radio alert warnings that anticipate the effects of a strong earthquake, because radio waves are faster than seismic waves.
The Seismic Alert is automatically activated when the stations installed on the coast of Guerrero detect the start of a large magnitude earthquake and send the signal.
