Trail runs can be found in the Netherlands in all sorts of types and distances. For those first steps on the trail as well as the hardened kilometer devourers, there is always something adventurous to be found in our nature. We have selected a number of special trail runs that each excel in their own way.
The Veluwezoomtrail
We kick off with a resounding name for anyone who has been around the trail running world for a while. Veluwezoom trail is namely one of the oldest trail runs in the Netherlands. The course palette is filled with vast forests, heathlands and rolling hills and this trail takes you through the mighty beautiful National Park Veluwezoom. A trail that challenges you physically with altitude meters and varied routes. Including great views over the rolling heathlands in this hilly landscape.
Lighthouse Trail Ameland
A trail run on an island immediately sounds adventurous and exotic, right? Well, this trail run in March will not be a tropical scene, but it is certainly special. Ameland is a protected nature reserve and even falls under the Natura 2000 nature. So then you know that the natural beauty is good. It is not without reason that this trail run is also called the nickname ‘Wadden diamond’. The trail offers a varied course over single tracks, loose sand, forest paths and of course dunes and beach where you secretly still take quite a few altitude meters. Here and there watched by dancing foam heads and undoubtedly with a strong sea wind through your hair.
Sallandtrail
March 8th is the Sallandse Heuvelrug is once again the cradle for trail runners who come to conquer the moraines. Or at least try. This beautiful nature reserve offers, in addition to forests and heathlands, unique elements such as large boulders and burial mounds and therefore moraines. Places that house the stories of our ancestors and are now the silent witnesses of the running performances delivered. The trail consists almost entirely of unpaved paths with alternating forest paths, sandy roads and single tracks. As a trail fanatic, you can choose from 10 and 25 kilometers and even two ultra distances of 50 and 80 kilometers.
Brooks Dune Trail Schoorl
Fancy a sandy calf biter? With a dune trail you can be sure that it will be a trail with peaks and valleys. The trail runs through the beautiful and challenging area near Schoorl, Bergen, Hargen and Camperduin. A hilly sandpit where you string together the altitude meters step by step. The routes through the Schoorlse dunes are characterized by steep climbs, fast descents and alternating dense pine forests and open dune landscapes along the coastline. This trail takes place at the end of Octoberso register quickly.
