In the Netherlands, a limited number of floor staff at Holland Casino make use of the early retirement scheme for heavy professions, according to the state-owned company. Het Parool and Algemeen Dagblad published articles about the scheme, which led to the incorrect conclusion that Holland Casino’s office staff also make use of the scheme.
In The Parool and AD articles have appeared this week about a new scheme that the government is working on whereby people who do physically demanding work are eligible for an early retirement. The newspapers also report that people without a heavy job are eligible for this, which is not the intention.
Minister Eddy van Hijum also wants the new scheme to be implemented differently than the current situation. The Early Retirement Scheme was introduced in 2022 and will expire at the end of 2025. An unnamed negotiator said the following about this in The Parool:
“The current scheme is also used by people who, with the best will in the world, cannot be said to have a demanding job, such as office workers at banks and insurance companies.”

Employees of Holland Casino are explicitly mentioned in the article in Het Parool. Among the total of 25,000 people who retired early via the current scheme for heavy work, there would also be employees of the state-owned company. In the article, they are mentioned in the same breath as office staff of banks and provincial officials.

Holland Casino has responded to this message via LinkedIn. According to the gambling company the suggestion can be made that employees at the head office of Holland Casino in Hoofddorp have made use of this special arrangement for early retirement. This is “not at all” the case, says Holland Casino.
The state participation indicates that a limited number of employees who work on the floor in the establishments make use of this arrangement. In 2023, it was eight people, and in 2024 the counter is currently at six. In addition, this was always under very specific conditions, as the gambling company indicates:
“Although many of our employees have worked for us for a long time and think they have the best job in the world, the work can also become difficult at a later age. It is concentrated work, with a lot of standing, at irregular times. We are aware of that.”
